The source material for the MCU, the original Infinity Gauntlet series, was the last gasp of the ambitious Marvel storytelling that defined the 1970s and ‘80s, before the publisher went in a much different direction over the next several decades. In the MCU, Thanos doesn't bask in glory, or try to rule the galaxy, after gaining the power of the Infinity Gauntlet and completing his crusade. In the source material, the Gauntlet and the Snap are only catalysts for his true role in the story, which actually leads him to join forces with the heroes and save the day in Infinity Gauntlet's climax.
