The Kosovo war and NATO’s bombing campaign ended on 9 June 1999 with a military technical agreement negotiated and signed at Kumanovo army barracks in Macedonia by British general Sir Mike Jackson, on behalf of NATO, and Yugoslav generals Svetozar Marjanović and Obrad Stevanović, for the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY). The agreement stipulated an end to hostilities, the deployment of NATO’s Kosovo Force (KFOR), the withdrawal of Yugoslav forces and the definition of a 5km ground safety zone around Kosovo’s borders and a 25km air safety zone, as well as the deployment of UN civil and security forces, but said nothing about the territory’s status. The UN Security Council’s resolution 1244, adopted the following day, confirmed the ceasefire and reaffirmed the FRY’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while authorising the establishment of a UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo.
