The S&P 500 was 2.8 per cent lower in another wipeout, and the index at the centre of many 401(k) accounts is more than 16 per cent below its record set two months ago. The Fed has been resistant to lowering rates too quickly because it does not want to allow inflation to reaccelerate after it has slowed nearly all the way down to its 2 per cent goal from more than 9 per cent three years ago. The yield on the 10-year Treasury topped 4.40 per cent in the morning, up from 4.34 per cent at the end of last week and from just about 4 per cent earlier this month.
