Venezuela: Trump threatens world order


In an overnight raid reminiscent of the 1989 US invasion of Panama and the arrest of its then dictator, Manuel Noriega, the US forces invaded Venezuela on 3 January and captured its President, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife from their heavily fortified Caracas compound. His actions herald the end of a liberal order and the emergence of a new international order that emphasises the use of force and revisionism. Although he claimed that his actions were to prevent illegal narcotics from flowing into the US through Venezuela and to stop the influx of migrants, Trump’s attack was a re-enactment of the 2003 invasion of Iraq: Venezuela’s huge oil and gas resources appear to be the main attraction.
