The US is poised to deploy thousands of additional soldiers from its elite 82nd airborne division to the Middle East even as the Trump administration seeks talks with Iran over ending the war. Taken together with some 4,500 marines already en route to the region, the deployment of 2,000-3,000 more elite Army forces brings the total number of additional ground troops dispatched to the war zone since the conflict started to nearly 7,000, and marks a new escalation in the conflict. According to a New York Times report, Riyadh’s de facto leader said the attack by the US and Israel presented a “historic opportunity” to reshape the Middle East.
