The troops were sent as part of a mission to protect “federal functions, personnel, and property,” a Pentagon official said on condition of anonymity, adding that the Guardsmen have been mobilized for “an initial period of 60 days.” “The American people, regardless of where they reside, should not live under the threat of occupation by the United States military, particularly not simply because their city or state leadership has fallen out of a president’s favor,” they said. Trump has similarly called Portland “war-ravaged,” but District Judge Karin Immergut issued a temporary block on the deployment of troops to the West Coast state of Oregon, after which the president threatened to use emergency powers against rebellion to send more forces into Democratic-led US cities.
