One of those mechanics relates to beating bosses, and, while it can be incredibly frustrating during certain sections of the game, it can also be incredibly rewarding, granting you some of the best weapons and camouflage suits available. This is one of very few nonlethal weapons you can find over the course of the game, and it has a much greater range than any of the others. The Mosin Nagant is vitally important during the later chapters of the game if you're doing a nonlethal run - it's useful during the fight against Volgin and the Shagohod, or really, anywhere there's a vantage point.
