Ukrainian woman who became a refugee in her 70s builds new Aussie life


Mrs Samkova set out on a 16-hour bus ride from her home in western Ukraine to Poland, the start of a long journey to a new life in Australia; eventually arriving on Hindmarsh Island at the mouth of the River Murray, about an hour-and-a-half drive south of Adelaide. The grandmother said she was also very thankful to the Association of Ukrainians in South Australian for its support, English lessons and a place where she could talk in her own language with others who had come to South Australia. She said she was encouraging her mother to take a break from feeling the need to be constantly in touch with the news, although it was difficult and they both had been dismayed by the recent political developments.
