The White House Office of Management and Budget, led by Russell Vought—a core figure from the conservative Heritage Foundation and a chief designer behind Project 2025—outlined the bare bones of what's being referred to as a skinny version of just the topline numbers. Federal budgets have been on an upward trajectory, matched by swelling annual deficits nearing $2 trillion and almost $1 trillion in yearly interest payments on the national debt, attributed largely to the hike in emergency COVID-19 pandemic expenditures, alterations in tax regulations that cut into receipts, and the escalating costs of Medicare, Medicaid, and other services, particularly for the health care demands of an aging populace. Vought has also been working on a $9 billion package that would drastically cut the 2025 funding for the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which includes the Public Broadcasting Service and National Public Radio.
