President Donald Trump’s suggestion Tuesday that his Board of Peace “might” replace the United Nations is likely to compound concerns that the body meant to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza — and that he will indefinitely chair — will instead become a vehicle for him to attempt to supersede the body established 80 years ago to maintain global peace. But at a meeting Wednesday of the Russian Security Council, Putin did not commit to joining the board but said his Foreign Ministry would “study the documents” and “consult with our strategic partners.” He also floated using Russian assets frozen in the US to pay the $1 billion fee for a permanent seat and for further reconstruction of Gaza. On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he has accepted Trump’s invitation to join the Board of Peace, even though he has openly fumed at the inclusion of Turkish and Qatari officials on the executive board for the implementation of the 20-point Gaza ceasefire plan.
