The high court over the weekend took up an emergency petition from the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas, which warned that Trump’s administration was preparing to deport another group of Venezuelan immigrants under the Alien Enemies Act without giving them a reasonable opportunity to contest their removals. While lower courts refused to step in, the Supreme Court issued an order blocking the deportations “until further order of this court,” inviting Trump’s solicitor general to file a response to the ACLU’s application with the court. Next, the court stalled Trump’s federal prosecution over his effort to overturn the 2020 election — and the conservative majority further gutted the case when it ruled that Trump was entitled to sweeping immunity from criminal prosecution.
