A former aide to Mike Pence, who served as Trump’s vice president from 2017 to 2021, previously described the Trump administration’s use of a public health measure to effectively seal the US’s southern border with Mexico during the COVID-19 pandemic as “a Stephen Miller special”. Waltz, a 50-year-old Trump loyalist and leading critic of Beijing, has criticised Chinese activity in the Asia Pacific and has voiced the need for the US to be ready for a potential conflict in the region.
