Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is urging President Donald Trump to back off of his threats to invade Greenland. In an interview on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday, Paul said that congressional support for an invasion of Greenland is virtually non-existent among Republicans, and that the Constitution prevents the president from unilaterally declaring an act of war against Denmark or any other country.Paul also added that it is up members of Congress, regardless of party, to provide a check on the president's impulses, noting that they are a coequal branch of government. "You know, I think it's an important debate, and our Founding Fathers discussed this extensively in the Constitutional Convention and the Federalist Papers, from Hamilton to Jefferson — the whole spectrum — they decided that the power to go to war was too important to place in the hands of one person," said Paul. "In the interview, Paul did not rule out bringing a second war powers resolution to the floor of the Senate that would block an invasion of Greenland, but noted that he recognizes that it may not have much support among Republicans who are uneager to be seen as casting a vote against the president's foreign policy agenda.
