I told them that indeed I had traveled all over the world and met all kinds of people, but that never in my 25 years of globe-trotting had anything like this happened to me. I thought of the unbelievably shocking movies I had seen of the Warsaw ghetto during the war and now understood how this could be. A little car full of people and floral pieces pulled up at the West Berlin side of the line and the driver explained that they were bound for the funeral of the grandmother in East Berlin.
