The past few years have been a great time to be a horror fan, and the last 12 months in particular have brought sure-to-be-classics like Sinners and Weapons, pleasant spinoff surprises like Final Destination Bloodlines and the yet-to-be-finished 28 Years Later trilogy, and fierce, distinctive visions like Together and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. The first half of the film sets up a traditional plot, with a clear goal and personal stakes, but the second half throws all that out the window and descends into a fever dream where the only goals are to stay alive and maintain a grip on reality. The loss is harrowing enough, but he also feels a sense of guilt and responsibility, because he told Esteban to wait in the car, and he only brought the boy out to the desert in the first place to find another child he failed.
