The Palestinian Doctor Treating Israeli Patients


Qasem Hassan, whom I profile in this week’s issue, is one of almost two million Palestinian citizens of Israel, an ethnic minority whose members have long faced discrimination—in the job market, in access to land and housing—but who nevertheless play a vital role in Israeli society. Qasem Hassan is the board chair of Physicians for Human Rights Israel, and the week after October 7th she had planned to join a delegation from the group to dispense free medical care and supplies to residents of the Gaza Strip. As the devastating toll of the war continues to grow, and the dehumanization of Palestinians becomes more pervasive in Israel, Qasem Hassan has felt more and more alienated from the country’s medical establishment—and, at times, questioned the decision that she made in 2023 to go to the mobile clinic.
