I think most of us would agree that the fandom’s vibes aren’t really positive towards Justin Verlander at the moment, but given what we do know about the organization, I suspect they are just fine in the clubhouse despite his performance to date. Burnes could have vaulted the Giants back into the thick of the wild-card race, and others who have come off the board would have given the Giants a lot more certainty, but on Jan. 7, it’s easy to see why Verlander became the right fit among the remaining options. Mason Black’s days as a major leaguer are surely destined to hit the lower bound of the initial scouting projections and he has already been optioned back to the minors after Friday night’s game, but it just goes to show that younger arms are able to capture lightning in a bottle that Verlander hasn’t been able to this season.
