On top of plenty of new series making their debut, over 20 series are making their return, ranging from shows that went off the air a few months ago like paranormal romantic comedy “Dan Da Dan,” to shows that went off the air over 15 years ago, like the deliciously raunchy “Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt.” In a market this crowded, it can be hard for shows to stand out, but it also means that there’s a show for almost any viewer’s taste. Then there’s romantic comedy series ranging from pretty good (“My Dress-Up Darling”) to awful (“Rent-a-Girlfriend”), plus second seasons of other shows that deserve more attention, like vampire romance “Call of the Night,” coming-of-age story “Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus,” and bro comedy “Grand Blue Dreaming.” There’s an action series like “Gachiakuta,” which boots a strong production team and hopes to stand out in the pack, as well as Netflix original alternate history series “Leviathan.” Then there’s a reboot of an ’80s horror comedy “Hell Teacher,” along with newer comedy series like “City” and “Nyaight of the Living Cat.” For something heavier and quieter, one of the more promising shows of the Summer is the aptly titled “The Summer Hikaru Died,” a coming of age horror story based on an acclaimed, poignant manga.
