Directed by Kevin MacDonald (the Oscar-winning One Day in September) and Sam Rice-Edwards, with Sean Ono Lennon as executive producer, One to One: John & Yoko (now streaming on HBO Max) reconstructs the popular culture narrative that surrounded the celebrity couple as they took residence in a New York City apartment, turned toward activism, and were inspired to create the One to One benefit, held at Madison Square Garden in 1972. The streamer features The Beatles ‘64, a doc produced by Martin Scorsese that draws on a mix similar to One to One, remastered Beatles footage and pop culture ephemera of the era, to contextualize the group’s 1964 arrival in the US. The space, not much more than the bed, living area, and a small spiral staircase, was carefully reconstructed by Kevin MacDonald and his wife, Academy Award-nominated set decorator Tatiana MacDonald, down to the tiny tube TV at the foot of the bed, which LP records were strewn on the floor, which of John’s guitars were propped in a corner, and what brand of cigarette was burning in the green leaded glass ashtray.
