“Spiritual evolutionism” is not some crazy, esoteric idea; so many Western theorists, all the way back to Plato, and contemporary philosophers, such as Hegel, Schumacher, and the new-age gurus like the Theosophist Blavatsky, Krishnamurti, and recently Chopra, have discussed it as The Great Chain of Being. Mirra Alfassa, more widely known as The Mother, was a French-born spiritual collaborator of Aurobindo and a key figure in the development of his philosophy of Integral Yoga. Such biographies are fine for those who see the Mother as a divine incarnation but can be off-putting for those who just want to learn about her life and her significance as an artist, a writer, the founder of the Sri Aurobindo ashram, and an important spiritual teacher in her own right.
