Red rising: the story of Utah football


By 1972, the university retired “HO-YO” and discouraged the use of the charged term “Redskins.” With the approval of the Northern Ute tribe, the teams of the university were officially named the Utes. Before getting the head coach position, McBride was the offensive line coach for Utah in the 1985-86 season and the offensive coordinator for the Utes from 1977 to 1982. In conference play, McBride led the Utes to a 58-42 record and won two conference championships, in 1995 in the Western Athletic Conference and in 1999 in the Mountain West Conference.
