But a firefighter in a nearby station did advise police that a woman fitting Dorothy's description had asked him for accommodation and the use of a car, both of which were declined. Ms Vaillancourt said she lost contact with her mother after a violent altercation in the family home in which she alleges she and her brother were physically attacked by their stepfather. While still in her teens, Ms Vaillancourt "tried to actively find out where [her mother] was, what happened [to her] … we were all trying to find out".
