After breaking the Liberal Party's 21-year hold on the seat of Ryan in Brisbane's west, Elizabeth Watson-Brown said voters felt "abandoned" by the major parties, and this showed "the tectonic plates are shifting in politics in Australia". Through Mr Chandler-Mather — who described himself as "one of the few renters in parliament" — said the Greens had been pitching themselves as the party of renters and those locked out of the housing market. "We need the Greens in parliament to keep Dutton out and push Labor to phase out negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount … cap rents, and invest the savings in building housing that renters and first homebuyers can actually afford," Mr Chandler-Mather said last week.
