As US President Donald Trump looks for ways to protect American pharmaceutical manufacturers and threatens the world with US import tariffs on medicines, Europe must tread carefully, according to Stine Bosse, Danish MEP (Renew) vice-chair of the SANT committee, and Jessica Polfjärd, MEP (EPP) the Swedish member of the same committee. And to do that, we shouldn’t give the same intellectual property rights to a company that produces here, in the EU, and to a company that is elsewhere,” González Casares said, calling for more drug production to be encouraged in the European Union. Bosse also commented on drugmakers’ demands for staying in the EU, and not leaving for the US or China, noting that Big Pharma wants the EU to strengthen data protection for new drugs, allow higher medicine prices and spend a higher proportion of its GDP on innovative medicines.
