When French officials contacted the CIA about Barbie's whereabouts because they wanted to extradite him on war crimes, the CIA lied, and told them they had no idea where he was. The Klarsfelds were persistent in their endeavors to have Barbie charged with war crimes, that the CIA dropped him, and he was finally extradited to France in 1983 to stand trial. During the 8 years Gehlen worked for the CIA, he gathered some good intelligence, and was able to infiltrate East Germany, but overall, the Gehlen Organization often had to resort to fantasy to keep the CIA satisfied with their work.
