Move from policy promises to concrete reforms, pharmacists tell FG

“Key developments such as the reaffirmation of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria’s regulatory authority, the formal protection of consultant pharmacist roles, and expanded public health participation through community pharmacy demonstrate that pharmacists are no longer peripheral actors but central contributors to healthcare delivery, regulation, and health security,” Tanko said. The NMA Lagos Chairman, Dr Babajide Saheed, and Secretary, Dr Jimoh Hassan, in a communique they jointly signed after an emergency State Executive Council meeting in May 2025, argued that the “cadre offers no contribution to direct patient care, violates established medical protocols, and potentially threatens the stability of health service delivery by creating room for industrial disharmony”. The PSN insisted that the Consultant Pharmacist Cadre is legally backed by a series of circulars and approvals from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, dating back to 2011, with reaffirmations in 2020, 2021, and 2023.
