As chronicled in the documentary Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink., when Julie Reynolds (along with journalists in about 200 other newsrooms) watched her newsroom get stripped for profit by a certain hedge fund, she and her colleagues were left unable to serve their communities in the way they had devoted themselves to. The sense of powerlessness in the decline of local news is a morally injurious event—one that is increasingly common as hedge funds and corporate owners prioritize profits over public service (Goldsmith, 2023). Moral injury and distress in journalism are not just personal struggles—they are threats to the public’s right to know--and subsequently our democracy.
