Some of the nominees' work is international, including a humanitarian who founded a global movement of first responder volunteers to bring relief to the world's disaster and war zones, and a migrant and refugee health expert who has spent three decades providing health services to displaced people in the border region between Thailand and Myanmar. Also up for the award are a volunteer paramedic who built a program that teaches young people first aid, a mobile health pioneer bringing diagnostic and clinical healthcare to rural areas, and a brain cancer fundraiser who established a research centre to bring together the brightest minds to find a cure. From fighting fires during the Black Summer, to helping people recover from the devastation of Tropical Cyclone Alfred to stopping a knife-wielding man from attacking a woman in 2016, the 50-year-old is determined to serve the community.
