It is the single most ubiquitous public health problem in the country, which bears the largest absolute malaria burden globally and is the single biggest contributor to global malaria cases and deaths. According to her, malaria transmission in Nigeria is highly heterogeneous, with year-round, high-intensity transmission in the southern and forest zones, and seasonal epidemics in the Sahelian north—complexities that make control and elimination particularly difficult. Providing insight into NIMR’s role in malaria control, Olukosi revealed that the NMEP and its partners recently selected the Malaria Research Laboratory at NIMR to analyse parasite identity in order to distinguish recrudescence from reinfection in support of therapeutic efficacy studies.
