John Ford's Reluctant War Movie: The Untold Story Of They Were Expendable


While in the Navy during World War II, John Ford made documentaries for the Navy as the head of the photographic unit for the Office of Strategic Services. The movie told the story of the crew of a United States PT boat unit defending the Philippines against a Japanese invasion during the Battle of the Philippines from 1941 to 1942. It should also be noted that this was one of the more accurate and detailed depictions of naval combat and warfare in the 1940s, which is likely why the U.S. Navy wanted John Ford to make this war movie.
