Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi told his Saudi counterpart Thursday that Japan will further cooperate with the Middle Eastern country, which is seeking to mediate between Iran and the United States amid the ongoing war in the region. Speaking separately by phone with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, Motegi agreed to work closely in support of efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East amid global energy disruptions caused by the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. Motegi said Japan has proposed through the International Maritime Organization to establish a "maritime corridor" to help ensure the safety of vessels bottled up in the Persian Gulf and called for international cooperation, according to his ministry.
