Jane Goodall, chimpanzee researcher and conservationist, is dead at 91


He hired her to observe chimps in the wild, and that initial journey into the forest — for a researcher with no formal training but ample patience and keen observational skills — was the beginning of Goodall's lifelong investigation into what makes us human. In 1991, Goodall incorporated the "Roots & Shoots" youth service program into the work of her organization in order to inspire young people to get involved in caring for the planet's natural habitats. Goodall was named a UN Messenger of Peace in 2002 and a Dame of the British Empire (the equivalent to knighthood) in 2004.
