Israel begins new push in Gaza as Trump calls for hostage 'deal'


It came as US President Donald Trump called for Israel and Hamas to "make a deal" in Gaza to see the return of remaining hostages kidnapped by Hamas after the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks. In a statement posted on X and text messages sent to many residents, Israel's military urged people in northern parts of the enclave to head south towards the city of Khan Younis, which Israel designated as a humanitarian area. "The [Israel] Defense Forces is operating with extreme force in these areas, and these military operations will escalate, intensify, and extend westward to the city centre to destroy the capabilities of terrorist organisations," the military said.
