Inauguration of Castellania Palace in 1760

Castellania Palace in Valletta’s Merchants Street presents three main aspects to the discerning visitor: a very good expression of 18th-century Maltese architecture, the building that witnessed part of the evolution of the Maltese legal system, and the edifice that witnessed a medical landmark: the discovery of the Undulant Fever (brucellosis) microbe in 1905. The Castellania became the Palais de Justice, and also housed the sittings of the newly-created justices of the peace and the members of the Valletta municipality. Perhaps it is fitting to end this short feature by noting that the single-roomed laboratory on the roof, where the eminent Maltese Sir Themistocles Zammit discovered the microbe of brucellosis in the blood of the goat, was restored in 1980.
