Mumbai: The iconic Nehru Science Centre in Worli, which was in the news recently after Congressmen protested the dropping of ‘Nehru' from the name of the new ‘Science Centre' Metro station near it, is getting ready to celebrate its 40th birthday on Nov 11.Untouched by the controversy, the Nehru Science Centre Mumbai (NSCM) is in a celebratory mood over the impending milestone in the life of an institution which has informed, entertained and educated thousands of science enthusiasts, including students. The science centre revolutionised the concept of understanding the principles of science," said NSCM director Umesh Kumar Rustagi. Not many among those who visit this verdant landscape, home to a science park and the NSCM, know how this was erstwhile dumping ground which bred mosquitos became a magnet for science lovers. The inauguration of the NSCM on Nov 11, 1985, heralded building of similar science centres at many places in the country. Dr Ghose recalls the result of Gandhi's visit was "a three-fold increase in the five-year plan allocation of National Council of Science Museums".A brainchild of Dr Ghose, the science centre came up in an open-air science park which even the Unesco recognised it as a unique concept which helps in learning science in an informal ambience.
