The missile can be launched from several fighter jets including the F-15, F-16, F/A-18, F-22, F-35, and NATO aircraft. In the case of Pakistan, the missile is compatible only with the F-16 fighter jets in its air force fleet.Pakistan has previously operated an older version of the missile. Reports also suggest the missile was used during the 2019 aerial confrontation between India and Pakistan, when an Indian MiG-21 aircraft was shot down. The newer AIM-120C8 version being offered to Pakistan is considered an export model of the AIM-120D, the variant currently in service with the US military. The deal announcement follows high-level meetings between US and Pakistani officials. Since the AMRAAM is compatible only with these aircraft, the purchase could involve additional maintenance and integration costs. The long-term repayment plan or funding source for Pakistan’s share of the contract remains unclear.Pakistan may use a mix of defence budget allocations, foreign loans, and US-approved credit lines to pay for the missiles, though details of the financing remain undisclosed. The AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles have ranges between 20 km and over 160 km depending on the model, allowing them to engage targets beyond visual range.
