How the Documentary ‘Call to Serve’ Spotlights Veterans Working in Disaster Relief: ‘If You Help Other People, You Heal Yourself Along the Way’


As Wagner reflects on how the organization impacted him personally, the cameras capture him leading Team Rubicon’s mission to help restore a Veterans Restoration Quarters (VRQ) in North Carolina, where over five feet of floodwater destroyed the living spaces and belongings of 167 veterans. “Then, as soon as there was solid intel that the hurricane was hitting and that’s where Team Rubicon is going, we’re on the ground while they’re figuring things out, embedding with them.” During the shoot in Florida, he recalls, “We ended up sleeping in a makeshift command center in a church, just following what was happening.” “The goal here is to coordinate in a much more comprehensive way and utilize all the resources that we can bring to the table, not just the financial.”
