An early executive order denounced “the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology” abroad in the land and called for “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” under which the Administration has sought to dictate what the American story is, and who can tell it. The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be hosting a conversation with Ken Burns in January, on “The Art of the American Revolution,” along with a screening of excerpts from Burns’s magnificent new six-part series, “The American Revolution,” out November 16th on PBS. And all this, as I point out in a piece for this week’s issue, is taking place under the shadow of a crucial political debate in the United States, in which Americans of every political stripe are asking: Are the people still their own rulers?
