The name was intended to invoke evil, and was taken from the South African Broederbond, the Afrikaans group who took over the South African civil service and eventually the country. Unfortunately, the contract we signed with the venture capitalists (we never needed their money so we shouldn’t have made the deal) said that my brother and I had to remain in the management of the company or we would lose our stock. My understanding was that, to a large extent, kids and teachers were bringing Carmen to the schools via the ‘back door’ as it were, not because the schools were buying large numbers of copies and asking the teachers to use them.
