While spokespeople for the service and George did not immediately return requests for comment, a Defense official confirmed to Defense One that the service had been waiting for the other shoe to drop since the Army’s vice chief of staff was pushed out late last year. George is the latest senior military official fired by Hegseth with little explanation, a string that began with the removal of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the chief of naval operations, and the vice chief of staff of the Air Force in February 2025. Though the Army was spared at the time, the Mingus and George firings have raised questions about whether Hegseth has his eye on the Army’s civilian leadership as well.
