Yet, the core ambition persists; he continues to frame Greenland as imperative for missile defense and minerals, bluntly stating the U.S. will achieve “all of its strategic goals… at very little cost, forever.” As Ole Wæver, a professor of international relations at the University of Copenhagen, skeptically notes, this is likely a “pretend” deal. The events have proven that the foundational trust of the Atlantic Alliance – the belief that the United States is a reliable guarantor of its partners’ security and sovereignty – is irrevocably broken.
