Bledsoe: “What is [Alcindor’s] reaction to Milwaukee’s winning the flip to get the first draft choice?” Alcindor: “He says he doesn’t know what to think about it.” Bledsoe: “How does he feel about the possibility of playing in Milwaukee?” Alcindor: “He says he has never been to Milwaukee, so he can’t have feelings about it one way or the other.” The next day, as the Bucks made it official by announcing they’d be taking Alcindor with the first overall pick in the 1969 NBA Draft, Alcindor and his advisors met with George Mikan and Arthur Brown, the owner of the Nets. It would have been different if the ABA had a better offer, but things not being the same, I went to the NBA…It was my decision and nobody else’s not to get into a bidding war because it degrades the people involved.
