Evia: Greece’s second largest island is a hidden gem with stunning beaches and few crowds

This elongated, geographically varied island—the second biggest in Greece, after Crete—is shaped like a giant seahorse busting a disco move, the snout gently nudging the Euboean Gulf in the north, while the tail fin trails off into the Aegean Sea about 110 miles to the south. Driving west from the town center, follow the signs (and hairpin curves) to Agia Paraskevi beach, where the biggest challenge will be resisting the temptation to spend a whole day savoring the soft sand and remarkably clear water. Wineries capture the spirit of the fertile Evian terroir; among those that welcome visitors are the Vriniotis winery in the north, Avantis winery in central Evia, and the Montofoli Wine Estate outside Karystos.
