He escaped war-torn Bosnia in the 1990s as a 17-year-old boy and started delivering papers for The Courier Journal, saving up money to build toward the American Dream. Every day between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., he walked the streets of the Highlands — him throwing papers to houses on the odd side of the street, his dad throwing to the even side. She knows if he had left 15 or even 30 minutes later from Nashville, he wouldn't be next to her on their couch, in this beautiful home with its looming mortgage and their two growing boys sitting on the floor, listening to their parents tell another family story of heartbreaking loss.
