Eid and elections often collide. But this week something was different

But community members say anger over the government's response to the conflict is just one part of the story and that a divide has been brewing for some time: between those who see political appearances as a sign of how far multiculturalism has come and others who argue it's inappropriate in places of worship. It was initially unclear whether he had attended any Eid events in his electorate, but days after the holiday he posted to social media a photo of himself at what appeared to be a mosque with the caption "Eid Mubarak" but no details of where it was taken. And while a visit by Opposition Leader Peter Dutton to a mosque in Leppington in Western Sydney on the second day of the campaign passed without incident, afterwards Muslim leaders sought to distance themselves from the alternative prime minister, stating that the invitation shouldn't be taken as an endorsement.
