As the son of a Korean War veteran, I feel that the burning of our beloved flag is a gross injustice and insult to every single person who has served and continues to serve in the various branches of our nation’s armed forces. I agree with the late Justice William Brennan’s comments in Texas v. Johnson: “If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the Government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable.” A real threat to democracy is opening the borders, allowing millions of unvetted into the country and shipping them to Republican-leaning states.
