István's physicality, including his perceptions of the natural world, is in contrast with the sparsity of the dialogue; the word "OK" is perhaps the one he says most. "It's part of the book's realism, and the engagement which the reader has with István is partly based on a very real, very strong sense of his reality and the reality of his world. "The humour is obviously in the banality and the repetitiveness; in the realism [of the dialogue]," he said.
