Whenever corporate powers, special interest groups, CEOs, and policymakers have a problem — say, their citizens don’t want something to happen that they desperately do — they always revert to the same playbook: hire lobbyists, launch ads, and then hire more lobbyists. Young and old, socialist or libertarian, Americans are fed up with these ugly monstrosities that are ruining rural landscapes and jacking up energy bills. When you have to lobby for or against something, whether it’s war or limits to how much rat poison you can stuff inside a cigarette, it’s usually a sign that the majority of us are getting royally screwed.
