Nobel wanted the recipient to be “the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”. In fact, the entire process surrounding the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been highly unusual, in the way it has involved very public lobbying for a particular candidate. At that stage, the US president had arguably played a role in a temporary ceasefire in the war in Gaza – but most of his subsequent claims had yet to come to pass.
