Cold Storage Review: Grisly Thrills & Charming-Enough Characters Keep Liam Neeson & Joe Keery's Tonal Mishmash Afloat


While he may be best known for his ability to tackle the grandiose elements of some of his stories, including War of the Worlds, one thing that Koepp has never gotten enough credit for is his unique sense of humor, often bringing a dry wit to his scripts that creates a sense of grounded realism in its characters. When it comes to the horror elements of the film, Campbell — who has primarily worked in television for the past 20 years on everything from HBO's Westworld to Netflix's Dracula — proves himself the perfect choice, taking a uniquely intimate approach to showing how the infection spreads both within the body and a nearby area. Taking a handheld approach that mixes distance shots with close-ups, Campbell almost feels as though he's striving for something along the lines of Kathryn Bigelow's A House of Dynamite, which just doesn't quite gel with the tongue-in-cheek horror tone the rest of the movie delivers.
